I HOPE this is a case of selective reporting and editing. I know it's fun to say how stupid Americans are. Still, I have a hard time believing we're all as ignorant as the people who love to hate us say we are. I, for one, knew the answers to most of the questions asked here -- and I don't consider myself all that much better informed than the norm in this country.
come on, Two Crows, it's just a funny video to have a laugh. anyway, in order to be balanced and PC and not to offend anyone (or maybe offend more!) I've edited the post by adding another similar clip about Britons' stupidity. watch it: it starts with the line:
"Just because some people don't know the answer of a few questions doesn't make a whole nation stupid"
and I agree, so WE agree, that's what I think. I am Italian and I assure you I know many many many stupid Italian people. many, a lot of, tons and tons...
hey, MW-- as I replied to your comment on my blog -- I'm just a little over-sensitive right now, mebbe -- with SO MUCH of our dirty linen just hangin out there for all the world to see. it's kinda rough when our president is such an imbecile not to figure that the world sees all of us the same way. my only comfort is the fact that we didn't elect him in 2000-- the SCOTUS picked him.
Exactly. You could do this anywhere and get a similar outcome. Ask the same questions to 200 people in any country in the world and you would easily be able to edit it down to show twenty people so stupid they probably couldn't smack themselves round the head with a saucepan.
Sadly the video on Americans is indicative of how poor our geography and history education is here.
I work as an airline attendant, trust me there are a LOT of ill informed people out there! I've had people ask me what ocean (Lake Michigan) we were flying over as we were flying from Chicago to Detroit!
Ocean? Unbelievable! I can't believe that someone wouldn't have ever hear of THE GREAT LAKES! Or the GREAT LAKES region! And the sad thing is this person was probably from Chicago or Detroit! (well maybe not, but you never know)
Mind you, I don't fault these people completely. Our system has failed them. And our corporate media has convinced a lot of Americans that if it isn't "American Idol" or "Dancing with the Stars" it isn't worth watching! Never mind the news! That's why I avoid getting my news from most domestic sources.
thank you American Scot (and Looking 4 good) for your comments. as I already pointed out, there's plenty of ignorant people all over the world, regardless of their nationality, if any consolation. however, you're right: Britons and Americans seem to be particularly weak in geography!
