This is not a Kikoy

I'm afraid that what is "worn" here is not a Kikoy, I've been told. However, if you want to wear a real Kikoy look no further than the original one at the School for the girls, where proud African girls with different abilities manufacture the stuff themselves and sell it directly in order to self-finance their studies and keep their project running.

The project is quite simple: Kenyan young ladies who suffer of severe medical conditions on top of their usual hardship in Nairobi's slums, well, in spite of this double misfortune they didn't give up hope to improve their education themselves. It works as follows:

1. You want a Kikoy and, trust me, you really want it. LOOK INTO MY EYES: you've always wanted a Kikoy. Even if a Kikoy never crossed your mind, now that you know about it you’re really desperate to get one after I've telepathically subjugated your mind through this mischievous post. No matter whether you prefer Ally McBeal, Desperate Housewives or Sex in the City, what you really want for Christmas is a Kikoy.

2. The happy girls in Nairobi make you a Kikoy and you buy it, so that they make some little money. Should you happen to be Mrs Carmela Soprano from the Sopranos, you buy two Kikoys just because you are instructed to do so by this very intimidating Italian blog, and with the second one you make a present for the wife of LAPD’s Lieutenant Columbo.

3. The girls in Kenya use the cash to study and become doctors and lawyers who will rule their country eventually, and deeply fuck you white supremacist. You white supremacist wonder whether you may turn out to be the loser in this capitalist transaction, and as a white supremacist myself I agree that you may well be right, but never mind.

4. President Obama must do something about this global mess caused by you buying a Kikoy. The international crisis is sorted out by a brilliant Michelle Obama wearing a bipartisan Kikoy donated to her by Lieutenant Columbo’s wife, who got it herself as a gift from Carmela Soprano, and at the end of this cumbersome diplomatic process the world is a better place.

5. If you are a rather simple and rational person, forget all the above and just buy a Kikoy or at least give a link from your blog to the School for the girls. Thank you and seasonal greetings.

The Lodo Alfano is unconstitutional, according to the 15 judges who sit on the Constitutional Court. The law known as the Lodo Alfano, which suspends criminal proceedings against the holders of Italy’s four highest posts (the president of the republic, the leader of the Senate, the leader of the Chamber of Deputies and the prime minister), has been thrown out by the Constitutional Court. The decision was taken by a majority of nine votes to six. Its immediate impact will be the reopening of two trials in which Silvio Berlusconi is a defendant. semifinals: world No.1 Justine HENIN from Belgium, a slightly troubled country, won over eternal hopeless No.2 Ana IVANOVIC from Serbia, a much more troubled country... in the other semifinal, world No.5 Maria SHARAPOVA (above left) from Russia, an even more troubled country, was defatead by Rebecca ALITSI (above right) from hosting Kenya, another country not troubled at all these days... here you can see SHARAPOVA firing her most powerful first serve at 120 mph (unfortunately the photographer missed the hand holding the racket), but ALITSI doesn't seem to be impressed.









as you can see, SHARAPOVA was not happy. then, in a dramatic final, ALITSI beat HENIN 7-5, 0-6, 7-5. unfortunately again, the bloody photographer missed the tool used in the trade

Amref ! African Spelling Book - Sillabario africano.

le coincidenze sono talvolta veramente curiose. oggi al lavoro notavo sul sito del Corriere la pubblicità dell'Amref (African Medical and Research Foundation) su come dissetare l'Africa, poi stasera torno a casa e nella posta "convenzionale" (snail-mail) trovo un DVD in omaggio da una nuova amica, Manuela, che lavora proprio per l'Amref. si intitola "African Spelling Book", o Sillabario africano: è bilingue anche in italiano, composto da brevi documentari realizzati da ragazzi di strada di Nairobi che offrono l'opportunità di esplorare il loro mondo da un punto di vista che sfida i pregiudizi e mette in discussione i luoghi comuni sul continente nero.

visitate Amref su Wikipedia per scoprire la storia straordinaria di questa fantastica organizzazione umanitaria, o direttamente il loro sito in italiano per sapere di più sul film.

Un altro scoop eccezionale di Miss Welby: ho trascorso la notte scorsa a cercare una foto di Orietta Callegari che si era persa nel web, poi finalmente l'ho ritrovata. Ecco dunque Orietta con la sua amica kenyota Rebecca Alitsi (linkata qui nella sidebar). Per coloro intellettivamente svantaggiati, preciso che Rebecca è quella a destra.

Ah!, intanto che cercavo, ho trovato anche due foto delle nipotine di Orietta, una bionda e una rossa. Per coloro intellettivamente svantaggiati, non saprei precisare se le nipotine siano quelle a sinistra o destra nelle rispettive foto: come è chiaro da questo post, sono un po' intellettivamente svantaggiata anch'io...

But, now, here's the scoop: who on earth knew that Mrs Orietta turns out to be the daughter of this great Italian footballer who in his days was never given the chance to play for the national team just because of dictator Mussolini's contempt of him as "the anarchist".

If not, he could have been champion of the world in 1934 and 1938, both won by Italy, but never mind: he morally is a champion of the world as the father of Mrs Orietta, a champion of the world in humanitarian aid.

And don't forget Italy again are the champions. Gino, you were a champion and WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS !

Rebecca Alitsi mi è personalmente sconosciuta. Ma so da fonte fidatissima che è povera e malata ed è stata maltrattata. Eppure pensate: come Mauro è LEI a sponsorizzare questo blog, non viceversa!, tramite un'altra persona amica di entrambe in Italia.
